Campo Hablado (The narrated countryside)

  • Those who are waiting in the dark (12)
  • The Embrace of the river (13)
  • Wounded Night (14)

The oral tradition of the Colombian countryside,
threatened by violence and displacement,
is perhaps the key to understanding our future.

The grandmothers’ story in the dark
makes us imagine other possibles
and travel among the invisible
in cinema.
Understanding fear,
its caring function.
Our modest place in front of an unknown immensity.

The trilogy is conceived as a mirror:
Carmen, in En lo escondido, looks at herself from her farm in the countryside which she will soon leave;
Blanca, from Noche Herida, is her reflection from El Paraiso,
a self-built neighbourhood on the outskirts of Bogotá,
where she came escaping from the countryside with her three nephews;
The Embrace of the river is the shiny surface that conveys the image,
it is full of rust, mould, death and also,
a shaman, whom they call Mohán.
He, with so much violence, does not like to go out anymore.

Campo Hablado (The Narrated Countryside), is a documentary project
that seeks to draw close to the oral tradition of the peasants
of the Colombian countryside and the way they deal with the violence
of which they have been the main victims.
It is a cinema project.
This film is not about making an inventory of traditions.
It is not about listening to legends or contemplating the landscape,
but rather placing oneself there where words add a new layer
of meaning to the landscape, where the real and the imaginary mingle.
